Title:Science Laboratory Technician

Addition of full-time, 10 month, professional staff for Biology, Chemistry and Physics Laboratory Preparation and Stockroom Management.


This Science Laboratory Technician position is a 10 month, full-time position.  The Lab Technician will work in the new lab science facility that has the latest safety and scientific equipment as well as the newly renovated physics lab space. The successful candidate will hold a baccalaureate degree in Biology, Chemistry or closely related field.  Job duties will include: prepare materials for laboratories and class demonstrations for biology, chemistry and physics courses, stockroom and prep room management, monitoring, supervision, and maintenance of instruments and equipment, supervise work study students, and assist in laboratory supervision.  Summer work may be required, but is dependent on summer class schedule and projects that may require extended time for completion. 

Job duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare laboratories for Biology, Chemistry and Physics Laboratories.  This will include preparation of chemicals, stock solutions, microbiology or other media and specimens, distribution of glassware and equipment, experimental setup and breakdown, restocking lab materials for multi section labs, and insuring the presence and operating condition of safety equipment.   The laboratory technician may be asked to participate in the development or troubleshooting of or to pilot experiments for science laboratories as well as carry out basic molecular biology techniques like PCR and electrophoresis.
  • Demonstration Preparation:  The technician will assist in the development and preparation of demonstrations for classroom use, including setup, breakdown and presence of appropriate safety equipment for the instructor and audience.
  • Stockroom Management.  The Laboratory Technician is responsible for keeping the stockrooms and laboratories orderly, making sure appropriate supplies are present in the laboratory spaces, and keeping a current inventory of reagents, chemicals, glassware and laboratory equipment.  In concert with the department members, the Technician will place orders of laboratory and office supplies, works with program chairs on approval of invoices and helps maintain departmental budget records. 
  • Monitoring and maintenance of safety and compliance in the laboratory.  The Technician will act as the contact person for waste management, coordinate campus wide hazardous waste disposal program, maintain records for safety and compliance in the laboratory.  Technician will conduct monthly and annual testing of safety equipment to maintain a safe laboratory.
  • Report and monitor issues with science building.  The Technician will report issues that arise in the science building to facilities management and work with facilities management to resolve the issues.
  • Monitoring and maintenance of equipment.  Lab Technician will schedule and supervise maintenance, repair, and service of all equipment and instruments as needed and monitor equipment and instruments for proper function on a regular basis.  Lab Technician also carries out routine maintenance of some equipment
  • Work Study Student Supervision.  Work study students will report to the Laboratory Technician for assignments.  The Laboratory Technician will monitor work study student work attendance, job performance, and approve student time sheets.  The Technician will stay in contact with department members to ascertain needs that the work study students fulfill.  Work Study Students may be directed in the preparation of materials for laboratories, laboratory set up and clean up, and other such duties.
  • Assist in the Supervision of Laboratories as needed for Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  The Laboratory Technician assists with supervision during the laboratory period as her or his schedule allows and as needed. 

Minimum Qualifications
Successful candidates will possess an earned baccalaureate degree in Biology, Chemistry or closely related field.  Experience in laboratory management, laboratory preparation, student supervision, teaching, and familiarity with safety, waste protocols and purchasing procedures are extremely desirable.  Opportunities to teach laboratory sections may arise for candidates with a master’s degree in an appropriate field.  Additional duties relating to safety and compliance in the laboratory for those with appropriate training and education.
